Episal Skin Care Products

For dry skin, the Episal care range offers complete and natural skin care which alleviates symptoms such as irritation and drying out of the skin, pronounced flaking, reddening and itching. Special emphasis is given to adequate hydration of the epidermis and normalisation of the affected epidermal barrier function, i.e. adjustment of lipid deficits to reduce water loss and proneness to inflammation and eczema.

The Episal skin care range is based on the healing effect of Dead Sea salt for very dry to extremely dry skin and for skin rashes. The mineral-rich Dead Sea salt in Episal contains significantly more calcium and magnesium salts than normal sea salt. These salts are excreted by the body, including via the skin. Episal gives these substances back to the skin and balances the mineral content. Episal therefore has a soothing effect on the skin, stimulates its cell regeneration and metabolism, and thus restores its natural barrier (the hydro-lipid protective coating).

Compared with conventional products made with Dead Sea salt, Episal contains a number of additional substances which supplement the simple effect of mineral-rich salt in a constructive way, thereby ensuring protection and care of your skin. These are particularly high proportions of carbamide (urea), panthenol, glycerine and vitamin E. Due to this composition, excellent results are achieved when treating skin conditions with Episal. This applies both to persons who suffer primarily from the discomfort of dry and irritated skin (xerosis, sebostatic skin) and to persons who suffer from severely flaking skin (psoriasis). Episal represents a useful and effective care supplement for psoriasis sufferers.

Episal skin care products have been developed for everyday use, to cleanse your skin gently and to give it regular protection. Episal care products are produced naturally, are soap-free and contain no colouring agents, allergy-triggering fragrances or preservatives. Episal skin care products have been successfully tested for their dermatological properties without the use of animal tests.
Dead Sea Salt

The Dead Sea is the lowest point on earth. Its surface lies at around 400 m below sea level. The Dead Sea is fed by underground sources which provide the sea water with especially high mineral levels and contains more than 20 different minerals. The geographical location and the climate lead to a very high concentration of minerals, allowing the mineral and salt content to climb to more than 29%, which is virtually ten times the amount found in other seas (up to 3%). The high concentration of salts and minerals is also the reason why there are hardly any living organisms and why the sea is called ‘dead’. However, healing forces have rightly been attributed to the Dead Sea with its high salt concentration for thousands of years.

To begin with, it is the high proportions of minerals, especially potassium, magnesium, sodium, calcium and bromide, which are thought to contribute to successful treatment of rheumatism and chronic skin conditions such as neurodermitis and psoriasis. The composition of both the salt and mud from the Dead Sea is unique and they represent important constituents of the Episal skin care series.

The high sodium and potassium concentrations in Dead Sea salt have the effect of catalysts for membrane transport, the transport of minerals and other nutrients through the cell membrane and on into the cytoplasm.

Calcium and magnesium have a soothing effect on the skin, stimulate the circulation and cell renewal and are important regulators in the homeostasis of the epidermal barrier. Magnesium is also known for its anti-inflammatory effect. The salt has an astringent effect, supplies the skin with moisture and loosens flakes of skin. The skin becomes smooth and moist and the natural coating of moisture is restored. The mineral mud in the form found in the hair pack has a soothing effect on skin irritations and inflamed scalps and stabilises the skin.

Compared with artificial and cosmetic moisturizers, the natural constituents of Dead Sea salt in Episal have the advantage that they do not extract any moisture from the lower layers of the skin, but penetrate the epidermis and develop their positive effect there (e.g. Episal Lipolotion). The higher mineral content in the skin means the skin cells absorb more water in order to restore their balance. This not only promotes the activity of the skin cells, but also improves the excretion of toxic substances as well as the overall appearance and the moisture content of the skin.

Our Skin

Our skin is one of our most important organs. It protects the interior of the body from harmful influences from the outside and against loss of water. Numerous metabolic processes take place via the skin, for example oxygen exchange, heat exchange (cooling and sweating), moisture exchange, purification via the sweat glands, care of the skin and hair by the sebaceous glands, etc. But the skin is also an important sense organ, which literally allows us to ‘feel’. It is the image of our self which we present to the outside world and can also reflect our inner states and own health.

Every day, our skin is exposed to harmful environmental influences such as the sun, clothing, friction or inner stress. The skin can become washed out and dry as the result of excessive pathological flaking (e. g. psoriasis), or due to frequent washing and over-aggressive soaps (detergents) and may lose its natural protection, the lipid and moisture content. In addition, the skin can also be particularly sensitive – a phenomenon which is becoming ever more frequent in today’s society. As the skin ages, it naturally becomes drier and less greasy and therefore requires special care so that it can continue to maintain its protective barrier function. Dry skin is less elastic, susceptible to infections and more prone to eczema.

Episal is based on the healing powers of Dead Sea salt and helps the body to maintain the skin’s hydro-lipid protective layer and to compensate for loss of minerals caused by stress, poor diet and the sun. The high proportions of magnesium, minerals, urea and panthenol inhibit the growth of bacteria and protect and care for your skin.

However, it is important that you make your own contribution to achieving healthy skin by eating a healthy diet and protecting yourself from prolonged exposure to the sun – which is much more effective than any sun protection cream. Ensure that your skin has adequate moisture from inside the body by drinking plenty of liquid. Drink only moderate amounts of alcohol and do not smoke, as this has the effect of restricting the oxygen supply to the body and skin, and the harmful substances in the smoke damage the properties of the skin. Eat a low-fat diet which is low in sugar and contains a high proportion of natural fibre.
